Welcome to my
website
Hi my name is John and I was born and bred in
Campbeltown, which is affectionately known as
‘The Wee Toon’, on the west coast of Scotland.
Starting with basic D.I.Y. woodworking,
progressing to decorative rabbit hutches, bird
tables and garden planters, I found myself
influenced enough to attempt wood carving.
On purchasing some basic carving tools, I slowly
taught myself to carve and I’m now hooked. Now
using chainsaws, chisels, power tools and
basically anything which gets the desired
effect, I am able to create a variety of
sculptures.
My main passion is to carve Mystical Woodspirits
of various sizes and shapes. Using the unusual
twists and flow of the grain, the faces evolve,
making each carving unique. I try to bring life
back into the wood with character and
humour.
The vast majority of my raw materials are
locally sourced and come in the form of
driftwood, collected from the beaches on the
Mull of Kintyre, storm damaged Scottish
hardwoods, reclaimed whisky staves from
Springbank Distillery and Bog Oak, reputed to be
over 3000 years old.
Over the past few years I have attended various
Craft Fairs and Wood Markets, along with my wife
Fiona and occasionally my daughter Alix. These
have given me great enjoyment and feedback,
encouraging me to develop my art further.
